Conscious Sedation Dentistry or Nitrous Oxide (N2O2)

Q: I get a little nervous about visiting the dentist. Do you administer laughing gas?

A: Nitrous oxide (N2O2), otherwise known as laughing gas, is a sweet-smelling gas administered through a mask that fits snugly over your nose. Masks are not reused, so we deter cross-contamination and maintain sanitary conditions. Nitrous oxide is also called conscious sedation because it causes intense relaxation, but patients can continue to communicate with the doctor. Nitrous oxide is quick to act, and the effects subside quickly so you can return to normal daily activities following treatment.

Q: Are there deeper sedation options than nitrous oxide?

A: Yes, the doctors of the Dental Group of Amarillo are licensed to administer oral conscious sedation. This pill creates a deeply relaxed state. Patients take the medication one hour prior to treatment and must not drive to or from their appointment. For more information regarding this option, please contact the office.

Q: Who can use conscious sedation dentistry? Who should not use it?

A: Nitrous oxide is safe for adults or children. More than eighty percent of pediatric dentists use nitrous oxide. However, it should not be to a pregnant mother or a child who is too young to communicate effectively. Nitrous oxide is a great option for adults who feel anxious about dental procedures.

Q: Will I feel pain?

A: The use of nitrous oxide decreases sensitivity to pain and it can be combined with local anesthetic, an injection that creates numbness at the site of treatment. Nitrous oxide can be administered before an injection.

Q: Will I be unconscious?

A: You will only be partially sedated and in a deeply relaxed state, allowing you to respond when spoken to. Our trained staff constantly monitors you throughout your sedation.

Q: Do I need someone to accompany me?

A: Not if you choose nitrous oxide. Recovery is rapid, and you can drive yourself home.
