Caring for your Teeth

Q: How often should I see a dentist?

A: The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings, although we may recommend visits more often for patients who build up deposits (tartar) at a faster rate or have other special conditions to be monitored.

Q: Why are regular checkups important?

A: Aside from maintaining a sparkling smile, checkups allow us to detect problems before they worsen. A cavity can easily be filled, but if undetected, it can develop into a more serious problem. Preventative care can also detect gum disease, a condition that may result in tooth loss if not properly treated. In pregnancy, the presence of periodontal or gum disease can affect the baby by causing a low birth weight or pre-term labor.

Q: Which type of toothbrush should I use?

A: We recommend a soft toothbrush with a small head because medium and hard brushes tend to cause irritation, teeth attrition, and abrasion, and they can contribute to recession of the gums. A toothbrush with a small head allows a thorough cleaning and is kind on gums.

Q: Is one toothpaste better than others?

A: Generally, no. However, we recommend fluoride toothpaste because it decreases potential for dental decay. Sometimes prescription fluoride toothpaste helps patients with extensive cavities or sensitive teeth.

Q: Should I use floss?

A: Flossing your teeth at least twice a day prevents cavities by removing stray food and built up plaque from between teeth and promotes healthy gums. Electronic flossers may make flossing easier for you.
